Framber Valdez OVER/UNDER 7 Strikeouts

Framber Valdez has claimed the ace of the Astros role for himself with the departure of Justin Verlander. After a stellar 2022, Valdez has been off to a strong start in 2023 with a 2.84 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. He also just had a streak of seven quality starts snapped after a disappointing outing against the Cubs.

The lefty has been racking up the punchies thus far, totaling 65 through 57 innings. He has at least seven K’s in five of his last six starts. Facing an A’s lineup that has the most strikeouts in the MLB (445), there is a good chance Framber goes wild this afternoon. Ironically enough, the A’s actually have really strong numbers against lefties this year (.265 average and .776 OPS). The only true stud southpaw they have faced though is Justin Steele, who went six strong against them. The numbers may be a little juked. Although the option is still on the table, I have to side with Valdez to rack up some K’s. Oakland has eight players with at least 30 strikeouts.

Framber saw the A’s three times last year. He punched out seven in two of them. I will say this though, there are signs that point to Oakland possibly being able to steal this game. They are a huge underdog at +300. If you wanted a longshot today, the Oakland moneyline is definitely in play.

Pick: Valdez 7+ Strikeouts

Shohei Ohtani OVER/UNDER 8.5 Strikeouts

It’s been the homeruns that have killed Shohei Ohtani this year. He’s allowed eight in his last four starts, which have ballooned his ERA from 0.64 to 3.23. His strikeouts have been all over the place as well lately. On Sunday, he draws a Minnesota Twins team that is tied with the Oakland A’s for most K’s in the MLB this season.

Even in a butter matchup, I really don’t like taking the over on this high of a number. Especially on Sunday’s, where things almost always get weird. We missed our PrizePicks parlay the other day because Shane McClanahan fell one K shy, and I flat out said it felt like too high of a number. I guess I’m a fool because I might be making the same mistake again. Ohtani has been inconsistent, yes. However, Minnesota’s swing-and-miss lineup provides a lot of opportunity for Sho-time to notch a lot of punchies.

Five different Twins have tallied at least 39 individual K’s. This is already a lineup Gerrit Cole dominated for a complete game shutty with 10 K’s earlier in the year. It is a high number, but look at it from the basics. Ohtani can strike out a lot of batters because his stuff is elite. AND The Twins lead the majors in strikeouts. Fingers crossed here.

Pick: Ohtani OVER 8.5 K’s
