Shane McClanahan OVER/UNDER 6 Strikeouts

 

SUGAR SHANE. How many times has this dude been on my card? A half dozen at least. The Rays have an intriguing matchup with the Toronto Blue Jays. The Jays just cracked Tampa last night 20-1, something that we think would be answered by the top team in baseball. With McClanahan at the top of the list for the AL Cy Young, it’s important he tally up another strong outing.

 

McClanahan has been a little elusive for me his last couple of starts, but I think we’re on the right side today. He faces a Blue Jays lineup that has a ton of power, and little swing and miss. The Jays are a top 10 team in not striking out. They hit lefties as well as they do righties with a batting average of at least .265 from both sides of the plate. On paper, it seems like a clear no go for Sugar. But what we do know is there are no lefty pitchers like McClanahan. Toronto hasn’t faced anybody in the same league as they have with the Rays’ ace. 

 

In an earlier start this year, Shane had six K’s in six innings, as he only allowed one earned run. It’s true he saw the Jays three times last year, and went under six strikeouts in two of them. It is a difficult matchup, no denying that. But a guy like Sugar Shane always has a great chance to hit his strikeout over. Toronto has seven different players with at least 30 strikeouts. I’m taking my chances with this superstar.

Zac Gallen OVER/UNDER 6 Strikeouts

 

Gallen getting lit up by the Pirates in his last start was not something I thought we would see. He has been one of the best pitchers in the league this year, and the Pirates made him look like he wasn’t ready for the big time. In all fairness, Pittsburgh has been drinking “Michael’s Secret Stuff” all season because they have been doing this to everybody.

 

ZG bloated up his stat line after his last outing, but I think there is room to improve today against the Phillies. Philly has lost seven of their last nine, and are in danger of being swept by this Arizona team this afternoon. They currently pose as a top 10 strikeout team (432), and have seven players with at least 30 K’s. Three of them actually have north of 50 strikeouts. The Philly team has not even come close to hitting their stride, much like last season. There are still a lot of opportunities to fade them until they figure it out. Gallen has at least six strikeouts in all but two outings this season. I doubt he throws up two stinkers in a row.
