2020 San Felipe Stakes Preview and Analysis

The last of the three Kentucky Derby prep races is the San Felipe at Santa Anita in California. I'm very excited about this race because we finally get to see my top-ranked 3-year-old, Authentic. Also joining in on the fun is my number 7 ranked 3-year-old, Thousand Words. These two put their undefeated records on the line and take on the winner of the Breeder's Cup Juvenile, Storm the Court. In only a 7 horse field, there is a lot to unpack.

I don't like Fort McHenry but it must be mentioned that he is the half brother to the two-time Horse of the Year California Chrome. He hasn't developed his speed like his brother and as a "speed" horse that lacks speed, you are just left as a horse... This race has 4 really good horses 2-6. Storm the Court shocked the world when he won the Juvenile, but I can't see him winning this one today. Authentic has been number 1 on my board for a while. Honor A.P. is only twice raced but looked good last out. Of the 3 derby preps today, this one has the most experienced horses with points coming into it.

Early Lean:The race I've been waiting to see all week. My early lean is that my top-ranked horse is running in a 7 horse field with 2 other speed horses. That usually doesn't end well, unless the other speed isn't on the same level. This sets up for a horse like Thousand Words or Honor A.P. to steal the show.
